Mac os catalina downgrade how to#

Can you provide step by step instructions on how to wipe my physical drive and re-install my OS? I appreciate your help! This is a little outside of my wheelhouse. I need my original operating system that came with my computer. I do have a bootable drive for El Capitan but it won't work, I get a ban sign. how does one erase the physical drive? I thought that's what I was doing when I unfortunately Mountain Lion is not listed in the OS bootable drives. Unfortunately, I don't know which backup was pre-Catalina and that was a month ago so I don't want to lose my work. I believe Catalina has caused this because I did backup before installing Catalina without problems. I renamed the drive by adding a "1" at the end so I'm not sure what I backed up. I thought that was odd but I don't remember where I was. I was in one of the apps, prior to the backup, and I did see two HD-Datas. For some reason Time Machine kept saying I had two drives with the same name, which I don't. Thanks and HWTech, I thought I saw Mountain Lion as an option in Recovery Mode when I upgraded to Mohave. I see that I can purchase it for $19.99 but since I already had it, in my mind I shouldn't have to purchase it again. From what I've read I need to wipe my computer and start over and that means I need a bootable drive with Mountain Lion OS. So now I would like to ditch Catalina and go back to Mohave. I've turned off my computer being able to sleep but still have to restart my computer when it's been inactive for a while. Then I accepted the upgrade 10.15.1 and that's when my problems started.

I upgraded to Catalina (not realizing it was a 64 bit system and lost communications with my scanner) and my glitches went away. I upgraded to Mohave for compatibility issues with websites but my computer was a little glitchy. I have replaced the HD with an SSD (set TRIM to yes), expanded the memory to 16 gb, and replaced the battery. If you are in the above 2 cases, the only thing you can do is to replace the Mac PC.Thanks for your response.
